I love my double pointed needles. They are useful for making I-cord, handy as cable needles when I can’t find the proper one, and of course they’re great for knitting socks. They’re absolutely indispensable for knitting socks with an afterthought heel.
In my “Socks on Double Pointed – Afterthought Heel” class, we cover everything you need to know about making this type of heel and working socks on double pointed needles. If you want to make heels and toes in different colors, an afterthought heel is the easiest way to do that. It’s also a wonderful way to get the hang of circular knitting and save all the tricky parts of sock knitting until the end.
Many knitters find working on double pointed needles more straightforward and less fussy than magic loop. I’ve found it helpful to insert the new needle into the first stitch keeping it under the “holding needle” to the right. The left needle tip of the needle you are knitting from should be above the “holding needle” to the right, and the new needle you are knitting onto, should be UNDER the “holding needle” to the right. If you’ve been wanting to learn to knit socks, or in the round, this is a great way to start!

Interested in learning how to make socks? Learn the basics of knitting in the round on double pointed needles while you knit this ankle sock. The sock has an afterthought heel, which is one of the easiest heels to learn. You don’t need to do any short rows, and if the heel ever wears out you can replace it! You can combine two colors for an interesting striped look, or work the sock in a single color if you prefer.
Wednesday April 4 & 11 1:00 – 3:00 pm
