From now through the end of November we will be collecting 7″ by 9″ afghan blocks.  The blocks will be on display in our window until the end of November.

The Lion Brand Yarn Studio will offer 10% off all yarn, hooks, needles and supplies needed to make the afghan blocks.  Just let us know you are knitting or crocheting for Warm Up America.  Turn your blocks in by November 30, and when you are finished turning in all your blocks, as a thank you for you good works, you will receive a 20% off coupon for your next purchase at Lion Brand Yarn Studio (limit one coupon per customer, please collect coupon when you are finished with you donation).

Stay tuned to this blog for more information on a joining party to make the blocks into colorful patchwork afghans to be donated to people in need through shelters, hospitals and social service agencies.

Because all sections need to be 7″ x 9″ so they can easily be joined, gauge swatching and blocking is helpful.

WIPs (works in progress), UFOs (Unfinished Objects). We all have them, stalled projects on our hooks and needles. Let us “unstall you”. Whether it’s an instruction on the pattern you don’t understand, a mistake you don’t know how to correct, or just a project you don’t like anymore, let us help you get to binding off. As an additional incentive to move on to something new, receive 10% off yarn purchased that day for a new project.

If you have a project you’ve been wanting to start but need a little help before you dive in?  Come by with the pattern and we will get you started.

How it works:

Come by the Studio on Friday July 9th with your project.  We will assign you a “Jumpstart Specialist” and a time to meet with him/her.  Knit, Crochet, Entrelac, Cable, Lace, Intarsia, Fair Isle, Sweaters, Socks, Hats–you name it, we will help you with it.

Appointment slots are 20 minutes each, and will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis.

Last Thursday we were thrilled to have  Margaret Hubert as our special guest.  Margaret came to the Studio last summer to teach a master class in freeform knit & crochet, and we were so excited to see her again.

Once we spread out all Margaret’s wonderful samples, set out her books ready to sign, we started to let people in.  In true Magaret fashion, she couldn’t wait to start talking to folks (it pays to come early!).  Well before the event began she couldn’t resist taking a seat and saying hello to the early birds.  They got a sneak peak at her next book that will come out in July, The Complete Photo Guide to Knitting.

We had on hand Margaret’s newest book, The Complete Photo Guide to Crochet, as well as Hooked Hats, Plus Size Crochet, Knits for Men and her incredibly popular, Knit or Crochet Have it Your Way.

Once the crowd had assembled Margaret told us how she got into designing and the inspirational tale of her later in life knit / crochet career in publishing.

The audience was not only treated to seeing Margaret’s beautiful samples, but to many wonderful demos.   We learned about top down crochet cardis, and pullovers, as well as some of Margaret’s special tricks.

The crowd asked so many great questions, and we were having such a great time, then when I said “we have time for a few more questions before we start our book signing”, Margaret laughed and saig “Oh, I forgot all about that!”

The die hard fans that stayed around after the event broke up got their picture taken with Margaret.  We adore you and hope to see you back soon!

MEN’S NIGHT AT THE STUDIO

Take (your needles and hooks) out to the ballgame – It’s time for Stitch n’ Pitch .  Bring your crochet hooks and help Stitch n’ Pitch set a world record!  The Lion Brand Yarn Studio is an official ticket vendor for Stitch n Pitch.

Make sure you get to sit with all your Lion Brand Yarn Studio friends. Order tickets by phone or in person between now and May 23rd and tickets will be ready to pick up at the Studio the week of May 28th (check this blog for an announcement when the tickets are in!)

- If you order them through the Studio you won’t have to pay any ticket processing fee.

- If you are a crocheter, help Stitch n Pitch get into the Guinness Book of World Records!  Show up at 2:15, in section 531 and be part of (hopefully) the largest group to ever crochet together at the same time!

Looking for a fun hang out? Want to meet other fun yarncrafters? Don’t forget about our free groups at the Studio. These are not classes, just fun social groups.

For Thursday Yarncraft Night (2nd Thursday of every month), Men’s Night (2nd Sunday of every month), and Morning Yarncrafting Group (every Friday morning), just come by with a project and knit, crochet and meet friends.

For the Amigurumi Club (3rd Wed of every month) come in with an Amigurumi pattern you want to work on, or check out our website for over 125 Amigurumi patterns. We also love Amigurumi show and tell, bring in finished objects and show off!

I do it every day on the way to and from the Studio. I know many of you do it as well. We hope for a seat so we don’t have to cling to the pole. We notice others starting, but we don’t care. We don’t mind when you go local (if you are working on lace).  I’m talking, of course, about yarncrafting on the New York City MTA.  My name is Patty, and I’m a Subway Knitter.  Now there is a wonderful new program to help us see, we are not alone.

The Subway Fiberphile Project is a way to strengthen the community of fiber lovers who knit and crochet while riding the subway. The project was conceived as part of the "Design Can Touch Someone’s Heart" class in the MFA Design program at the School of Visual Arts. Jennie Glaser, a student in the class, designed buttons for subway knitters and crocheters to wear so they can identify each other even when their needles or hooks are put away. Jennie has dropped off 100 handmade buttons to the Lion Brand Yarn Studio.

To get your free button, and join the traveling yarncrafting community, just ask at the register.  Then pick up your hooks and needles & ride with pride! (Quantities limited.)
