Meet Our New Artist - Nathan Vincent

This month we are thrilled to present Nathan Vincent . He has made three one of a kind works of art just to show at our Studio. Every three months a new fiber artist presents their work. These works are for sale through the Studio.
From the artist’s website:
My work explores gender permissions and the challenges that arise from straying
from the prescribed norms. It questions the qualities of gender by considering
what constitutes masculine and feminine. It critiques stereotypical gender
mediums by creating "masculine objects" using "feminine processes"
such as crochet, sewing, and applique.
Nathan also appeared on the Martha Stewart Yarn Show. If you missed it, click here to view the whole show (The Lion Brand Yarn Studio is also featured on this episode of Martha!)
To find out more about this amazing artist, come to our January special event. Nathan will be giving an artist talk on January 7th at 6:00 pm. We will announce more details in our December newsletter.

Wow - these are amazing! I would never have thought you could do something like that with crochet. But how did Nathan make the inside of the lion’s mouth?
Studio says: The crochet art is built around a taxidermy insert.

I’m not sure but the mouth looks like a taxidermy mouth. That is really fantastic! If it is, I wonder how he got the the fabric to attach and stay that way.

Wow, I Want the LION!!! Please, please, can I get the pattern for this in any way, somehow? Being a Leo, this one just ROCKS!!!!
Studio says: There is no pattern, as this is an art installation. These are a Fiber Artist’s one of a kind creations. Fiber is a tool artists use, like paint or clay!

These are so awesome! What a wonderful artist Nathan is to create so beautiful creatures. The lion’s mouth is perplexing. Is it yarn too?

I know a lot of artists have the idea, and others make it a reality. Did Nathan actually crochet all of this himself, or did he have help? It’s absolutely stunning either way!
Studio says: I’m pretty sure he did, but that’s a great question to ask him in his Jan artists talk!
November 11th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Oh my goodness these are amazing!

This is the most awesome thing I have ever seen. I dont really care for dead animals hanging on my wall, but crocheted ones that is a hoot!! That is what I need to do.. love it
November 11th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Awesome idea!! Taking crochet to new heights!! Can’t wait to see if he does more! Thanks for sharing this.
November 11th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
What a talent. When it come to art I dont think there is any such thing as the gender norm. Talent is talent. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us.
November 11th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
This is absolutely amazing! I can’t believe this is crochet. So creative! Thanks for sharing.
November 11th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
I echo what Tracy said….talent is talent, male or female! Hiding a talent simply because one is male or female and the talent isn’t “typical” of one or the other is sad, it deprives the individual of exploring his or her own creativity as well as depriving the public of seeing these awesome creations!!! These remind me of seeing the stuffed toy animals in FAO Schwarz but SO MUCH BETTER because they come from the heart and mind of the artist. Keep it up, Nathan, I’m looking forward to seeing much more! Possibly a jungle’s worth? or whatever strikes your creativity!!
November 11th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Seeing someone break out of the box and leetting go with thoughts of creativity. Such a difference from the real thing but stepping back it looks almost like the real thing. Thank you Nathan for striking out and saying I can do this. Do you have any other animals done>?Show us whenever you can and you can find the space. a mother and baby of some breed would be great. White polar mother and cub would be great with the white yarn etc. Go Nathan GO.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
I thought I was looking at the real stuffed heads of these animals until I saw the closeup. What a God given talent you have. Simply amazing. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing that talent with us.
November 12th, 2009 at 2:38 am
Amazing work. Beautiful, and much kinder to nature. No need to hunt when you can have these instead.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:52 am
You can get the lion’s mouth at a taxidermist shop….many teddy bear and soft animal makers use these props, for a realistic look to their creations…
November 12th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
VERY awesome! Especially for the animal lovers who like the atmosphere these give.
Kudos!
November 13th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
All I can say is WOW. All my years of crocheting and I have never seen such a talented person in many years. Kudos to you!!
November 15th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
I love this! Wonder how long it took to finish these beautiful animals?
November 15th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
WOW! Doesn’t even cover how great they look. Wish they would have been around when I had a room done in a jungle theme!!!
What an imagination and awesome creativity
