From now until Dec. 1st, the Lion Brand Yarn Studio is collecting hats and scarves for The Partnership for the Homeless, a organization committed to helping New York City families in need.
To celebrate the Studio’s first anniversary, the staff of the Lion Brand Yarn Studio will knit and crochet scarves in the window during operating hours from Oct. 1 to Nov. 22. All these scarves will be donated to The Partnership for the Homeless.
We will offer 10% off all yarn, hooks, needles and supplies needed to make the hats & scarves. Just let us know you are knitting or crocheting for The Partnership for the Homeless.
Once you finish making all your hats & scarves, drop them off to the Studio and we will take care of shipping. . . AND as a thank you for you good works, you will receive a 20% off coupon for your next purchase at Lion Brand Yarn Studio.

I definitely want to participate. Are there any specifics on length of scarves or size of hats? I did this a few years ago for a church and they had specifics colors,sizes, etc. Please post any if there are. Great job Lion Brand!
Studio says: Hi Patty, no, there are no specifics. Partnership for the Homeless is providing them for families with kids of all ages. Colors for men and women, boys and girls are welcome. The only suggestion is that you think about making them with washable yarns to make it easier for these families to care for them.

what a wonderfully generous idea! i would do this, even without the 20% coupon incentive.
and what a great way to use up those bits of leftover yarn (think stripey scarves and hats!) yum ^_^

Do the hats and scarves have to be knitted as I have quite a few scarves that were given to me as gifts that I will not be using and would like to donate them. Thank you.

Will you accept any other items, or just hats and scarves? I have made a few afghans and baby sweaters for which I have not yet found a home.

Great idea and I will also make a few hats. May I also donate used hats and scarves that are still in good condition? I would of course launder them before bringing them in. Thanks!

Any suggestions for long-lasting, washable fibers, outside of a super-wash wool? I’m sure that there are recipients of these items that, like me, have wool allergies.

I will be crocheting hats for the homeless i feel passionately about this issue since I was once homeless. I am now a designer and have just completed my 2nd successful show

It’s too bad these need to be dropped off in person because I would be glad to make a scarf and donate it but I live in Georgia. It’s a bit hard to just “drop one off” in person.

I twittered some questions to your twitter page and got 2 differing answers. Could someone help me out? My mom and I are working on hats to donate. When I asked if I could use handwash yarn I was told this: “machine washable is best for the scarves, but not needed for the hats. We will welcome anything!” So I asked about attaching a note or label to the item (explaining that the item is handwash) and I got this as a response: “it’s best to use machine washable yarn for your hats & scarves. Easy care is always best for charity knitting”. I had to look through my bins to find handwash yarn (moda dea 100% wool) and I did find some (not a lot though, sorry). My mom can literally churn out 7 hats in a good week (she’s retired so she has time to do them and is extremely excited to help). My question is: Is it okay to make hats that are handwash? After the first response I thought I could but now I’m not sure. It’s just that the 2 replies I received confused me and we were so excited to help the homeless. Even just using the machine washable yarn we should have about 4 hats to donate (wish I could donate more).

I love this idea! Since I don’t get into the city, I am just buying, and begging
Lion Brand Yarns to make hats, scarves and prayer shawls for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dallas, PA. They see that they are dispursed to the local shelter and to Hospice. Knowing someone will receive comfort is reward enough for me. I am so thankful that others are caring and sharing, too. Keep up the great works.

We just finished a craft sale for the Special Olympics in St. Charles, IL for which I made 17 scarves, 3 hats, a placemat, and 12 purses. How do we get discounts for charity work or for volume discounts. I have a bunch of family members that want matching vests, snuggles, etc. but buying direct from you is soooo expensive with the shipping, etc.

I, too, have a group( of eleven) that makes and donates crocheted items to our local hospital. We (The Lake Angels) just celebrated out first Anniversary and as of this month we have donated 100 blankets etc in 2009. Another person asked my question but I will repeat it. We are a group of moderate means woman who pay for the yarn our selves. Does Lion Brand offer any discounts to groups like ours?
We love the Loin Brand web-site and are planning a “field trip” to the new store in NYC. Our favorite yarn is Vanna’s choice. TX!

Our high school knit and crochet club makes hats and scarves for our homeless shelter every year. It is just one of the charity projects they work on over the year.
