BY PATTEN S. LAUREL

I made the Sunshine Baby Throw a year ago for a friend’s baby and had lots of yarn leftover, so for his first birthday, I made the Garter Ridge Baby Cardigan for him. I modified the pattern, changing colors at each ridge and shortening the number of rows between each ridge on the sleeves so that I used all the colors. It was so easy to make and turned out so cute. He just loves wearing his bright colorful sweater!

I purchased my yarns at the Lion Brand Studio store in New York.

In this class students will learn to custom-make their own sweater patterns. They will work through organizing the components involved in constructing two different types of pullovers with a round neckline. The first is the Classic Body silhouette that is based on the bust measurements. It is worked straight to the armholes, then, the armholes and neckline are shaped. The second is the Double Tapered Body silhouette. This sweater type is shaped along the natural curves of the body to the armholes, then, the armholes and neckline are shaped. Both pullover types will be planned with set-in sleeves. Students will be walked through accurately measuring a swatch, taking body measurements, writing a pattern, and calculating yarn amounts. Measuring a garment will also be reviewed.

Hyperbolic Crochet – What an Adventure!

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Yarn and math . . .

Last week we all felt a little smarter after Daina Taimina came to introduce us all to the fascinating world of Hyperbolic Crochet. Daina wrote the beautiful Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes.  Not only is it a beautifully photographed, fabulously written book, but it also won the prestigious, “World’s Oddest Book Title” award!!

Seventy-five people were in attendance to see Daina’s wonderful creations!

As always, there were lots of people knitting and crocheting in the audience, but this is the first time we’ve seen anyone spinning in the audience.  Cool!  The crowd also enjoyed sharing the amazing creations that people had brought.

Daina told us how she ended up going on this “adventure”.  Her story begins in the classroom…

While attempting to teach the concepts of Hyperbolic Planes, she was looking for the perfect model.  Here she shows the very first model ever created (you can read more about it here)–it was amazing, but delicate.  The model was made of paper.

We looked at some forms in nature showing off the beauty of math!

Diana showed this picture she used to illustrate one of the mathmatical principals.  She also shared one of her “ah ha” moments.  As she said “That’s a pattern.  I could make that”.

She tried knitting, but realized crochet lent itself perfectly…and Hyperbolic Crochet was born!

After our heads were swimming with ideas, there were people in the audience who were already thinking about how they could incorporate these beautiful shapes into their work.  We heard talk of scarves, embellishing bags, skirts, hats and more.  What will you do?  Send us your pictures.  We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
