Come by and see a very special work of art. Michelle Loughlin created Interference. Based on the size, shape and color patterns in the gulf oil spill, Michelle used Lion Brand yarns to create this piece just for our Studio.

Artist Statement:
Interference, 2010
Interference is a term used to describe the colors created when oil and water mix. Inspired by the BP oil spill clean-up efforts in the Gulf of Mexico, Interference is composed of colorful fibrous machine-knitted forms stitched and woven together to reflect recent photo documentation of the spill. First drawing and then knitting water-like forms, I reference both the mixing of oil and water as well as oil- netted shapes that are now seen floating throughout the coastal region. Part of what interested me in the spill documentation is the incredible array of colors that are present in the spill; from the blues, reds, and oranges to the golden sheens. Through fibers, I am capable of blending these oil structures on a macro scale, while maintaining a sense of autonomy on the micro scale where individual stitches, colors, and patterns are easily recognizable. In addition, pantyhose stuffed with hair were hand-stitched into the piece in a technique adopted from grassroots community clean up efforts. The shape of Interference was derived from the original map on the web site : www.ifitwasmyhome.com. The profile of the oil spill is continuously changing and I am interested in documenting the movement of the spill further.

Daina Taimina – Artist Talk & Book Signing
Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes
Thursday Aug 12th at 6:00 pm
ALL CLASSES AND EVENTS TAKE PLACE AT:
Lion Brand Yarn Studio
34 W. 15th Street
New York, NY 10011
Enter the amazing world of Hyperbolic Crochet. Come be inspired with the sculptural beauty of what a little yarn & a little math can create.
Daina Taimina: “I thought if something can be made out of paper, it can also be crocheted, so I made my first crocheted hyperbolic planes in June 1997 by increasing stitches in constant ratio – after every two stitches I did an increase by one stitch. The number of stitches in each row grew exponentially, so after finishing my first small, very ruffled one I realized that to explore the hyperbolic plane I have to change the ratio of increase.”

I love painting, but crochet is my new found addiction, so I just had to find a way to combine the two. I painted a bouquet of rosebuds and wisteria on this canvas tote bag and used Vanna’s Choice and Vanna’s Glamour to crochet a matching flower to go with the design. I liked the result so much, I’m currently working on a big canvas to go with the three flowers I just finished using the amazing Homespun and Hometowns USA yarns.

The Wonder Wheel, Parachute Jump, Cyclone, Elephant Hotel, curly fries, hot dogs & sea gulls. . . it can only mean one thing, CONEY ISLAND! Come see Coney Island as you have never seen it before, all made from yarn. The Lion Brand Yarn Studio’s summer window is a fiber celebration of all things Coney Island.
Come see the world famous Wonder Wheel, made from a spinning wheel!

The Cyclone, the one and only roller coaster that has been thrilling visitors and locals since 1927.

On the other side of the boardwalk you will find the Parachute Jump, Welcome to Coney Island Grin, and for a little trip down memory lane, the Elephant Hotel.

Look closely at the Parachute Jump, recognize anything familiar? The top is made from a yarn swift.

The boardwalk is populated by 45 finger puppets made from our own Studio staff. There are all sorts of animals, monsters, people, and . . .

one bride!

The seagulls are having a ball.

No visit to Coney Island would be complete without a trip to the hot dog stand.

Come by this summer and see all the fun!

Two fantastic weeks, two fantastic master classes, two FANTASTIC teachers!
Last week we were thrilled to have Melissa Leapman teach Colorful Cables & Mosiac Knitting. Melissa is the author of many books including Continuous Cables (now onsale at the Studio), Cables Untangled , and many more.
We had a full class on a chilly Sunday morning to learn these wonderful ways to incorporate color into knitting.
A close up of two color cables in progress

Melissa brought these amazing swatches to inspire!

Last Sunday our customers got a double treat. They were the first on hand to see Prudence Mapstone ’s amazing new fiber art piece installed on our gallery wall, AND got to take a master class with the freeform master herself!

Twenty people let hooks, needles, yarn, and their imagination fly, to create a series of amazing Scrumbles. (Click here if you are wondering what a scrumble is)

Since free form can be art or wearable art, Prudence also brought in some stunning samples for us to ooh and ah over!

Next up . . . Shirley Paden & Debby Ware!
