Last weekend was a time yarncrafters wait for all year long – Vogue Knitting Live New York! It’s like the mother ship calling us home. Three amazing days of classes, shopping, free demos, fashion shows, friendships and fun.
I have been proud to teach at VK Live for the last three years, and I must say each year the students and the organizers get more and more impressive. I was awestruck and excited to have 80 students in three fantastic classes (Blocking, Demystifying Knitting Patterns, and Knitting Technique*). For those of you on the West Coast, I’ll also be teaching at VK Live Seattle in April, so I hope you can join us!
In addition to all the fun of the classes, there’s the marketplace! Zontee, Devin, Brandyce, Grace, Jenn and Rin had a great time meeting customers from all over the world. The highlight of working at the marketplace for them was seeing our customers’ excitement over our yarns. A few came up to the booth just to tell them how much they have appreciated all the free patterns and great products that we have provided over the years! It was great to see what projects customers from different countries made with our yarns, like Juanita from Mexico who was sporting a shawl made from Vanna’s Sequins. We also saw some familiar faces who frequent the Studio like Kally who was wearing our Lantern Moon stitch markers as earrings (such a cute idea!).
As if Friday, Saturday and Sunday weren’t exciting enough, we decided to extend our yarncrafting joy by having the one and only Queen of Brioche come to teach two master classes, Nancy Marchant!
Nancy taught two classes, Basic Brioche and Beyond Basic Brioche. Despite being exhausted from VK Live, most students stayed for both classes so that they could get all the knowledge they could from Nancy before she left NYC! Using a brioche stitch will give you a nice stretchy fabric that is very three-dimensional and squishy. The thing that is also great about this stitch is that it will yield a piece that is totally reversible! Learning the stitch is a little tricky initially but once you get the hang of it there are endless possibilities.
Nancy showed us various samples with totally different looks that were just created with simple increases and decreases, adding colors, and switching between the brioche knit stitch and the brioche purl stitch. Once we learned the stitches, she encouraged us to try different types of yarn and experimenting with needles sizes to get different effects.
