Have you seen our new window display? Our fall window was inspired by J. Howard Miller’s iconic Rosie the Riveter. Juliet explains:
“Rosie the Riveter is such a cultural icon for women’s empowerment. Recently Michelle Obama, Rihanna, and even Kanye West have used her image to send a message, so we thought we would pay homage to J. Howard Miller with our very own Lion Brand Yarn version.”
Maybe you are also wondering which yarns were used, or how it was made? Juliet describes the process:
“This wall hanging features Hometown USA®, Heartland Thick & Quick®, and Vanna’s Choice®. Rosie is knitting from a big ball of Hometown USA®. It is mainly machine knit in a mixture of stitches and then pieced together by hand.”
This display is a beautiful work of art, but it carries a very important message as well. Juliet says:
“Every fall we devote our window to the theme of charity and this year we’ve chosen Project Linus. Their mission is to comfort children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans. Although we only had space for KNIT FOR CHARITY we hope crocheted donations arrive too!”
Read more about Project Linus:
Headquartered in Bloomington, IL, Project Linus has over over 400 chapters nationwide. As of 2007, over 2.3 million handmade blankets have been donated to children in need by local chapters in local communities. Almost 150 chapters of Project Linus are registered in the Lion Brand Charity Connection database, where we also collect stories from customers who share their passion for this and other worthy causes.
Judie Agee, one of the many people who have written about Project Linus and a chapter coordinator herself, writes “Project Linus blankets have a wonderful, positive effect on the children who receive them.” We couldn’t agree more, which is why we are proud to support Project Linus with this year’s charity drive!
