Seaming
The time has come to put all the pieces together. There are 2 cuffs, 1 collar and the bodice. Let’s start by attaching the cuffs to the sleeves. Before sewing please pin everything together with the split ring stitch markers to ensure the pieces are aligned properly. There are different methods of sewing/crocheting pieces. We have the directions for some of them on our website:
- Invisible Seaming (look at the picture of a beige cardigan)
- Slip Stitch Crochet this one will leave a seam.
- Whip Stitch (picture of the red sweater)
When the cuffs are attached to the sleeves we can proceed to sewing the side seams and sleeves. Please note, this will be ONE seam from the bottom edge all the way to the cuff. Pin the side seams and the sleeve together with the safety pins, split ring stitch markers, or locking stitch markers. Repeat for the other side.
Attach the Collar
Pin the collar to the right front, back neck and left front of the cardigan, stretching it evenly. Start by folding the collar in half and marking that point, then fold the back neckline in half and mark that point too. Now, pin those two points together. Then pin the bottom of the collar to the bottom of the cardigan and everything in between. You can use any method to sew it on, but my students preferred the invisible seam over others.
Finished Products!
Here is what we made as a group:
Now, look at the differences: here is Pat’s, who liked the pattern exactly as is. Her cardigan is neatly executed and carefully put together.
And here is Stephanie’s, who wanted her cardi to feel and look lighter, so she can wear it in spring. Notice the knitted collar!!! Isn’t it gorgeous!
Overall my students found this project to be quite easy and fun. About half of them decided to make some changes to the design, like skipping the cuffs or making the collar narrower to avoid the bulk at the neck. A simple project like this leaves you plenty of room to make it yours.
