The NYC-based publication AM New York gave Gretchen a ring to talk about one of her favorite subjects: the innate creativity of human beings. AMNY included her comments in a piece about the resurgence of crafting, plus a list of the best places to learn to craft in New York City. We’re proud to say, Lion Brand Yarn Studio made the list! Join us for a workshop or Master Class and tap into your creative side, and read the full article here.
Gretchen on Creativity
This shared desire to create is a wonderful reason to take a class. We offer private lessons, but there something special about learning in a group setting. “There’s a deep thing in people – humans are makers,” Gretchen told AMNY. “There is also something to be said for having a community of people with whom you share your interest about the same ‘weird’ stuff.” In what can be a solitary life in the big city, it’s rejuvenating to find new friends who want to spend time in the same way – stitching.
Another valuable reason to come to class is the help only an instructor can provide. When watching how-to videos online, “there’s no one to look at your work and to tell you where you went wrong,” Gretchen said. “People become frustrated and put their work down and never pick it back up again. We don’t want that to happen.” In addition to classes, we also have drop-in help sessions, if you run into trouble.
Gretchen on Teaching
Gretchen has been teaching since 2011, and loves to teach the techniques she uses most often: Fair Isle, anything sock, brioche, and textures of all kinds. One of her favorite aspects of crafting in general is the way “it’s kind of like solving puzzles.” Though it can take time to figure out the reason for a problem, it’s an enjoyable challenge, she says. When she’s teaching, the best moment is when a student suddenly ‘gets it’. She also loves to teach students how to personalize their work: “easier ways to do something, or a technique for casting on or binding off that will make their projects really special.”
