This season’s window has been a big hit! We’re so excited to bring a farmer’s market-themed window to welcome spring to the city! This was a real team effort from our staff! Our talented designer Juliet shares her inspiration below!
The theme was inspired by Lion Brand’s President David Blumenthal. He has been wanting a fruit stand for ages and with some encouragement I got started. While gathering ideas for the display you could find me standing in deep thought in the fruit and veg aisle of supermarkets and staring intently at the way fruit boxes were stacked on street stalls. I even had to bring a box of raspberries into LBYS so I could find just the right color/texture yarn (Lion’s Pride® Woolspun® in Cranberry)! The challenge is to find a way with color, shape, texture to suggest a fruit or vegetable, even if it is just for a moment, so the viewer can be surprised.
I think for realism, Darrin takes the prize with his needlefelt apples. It can be such a painterly technique. For simplicity, Rosanne’s handknit, berry stitch raspberries are very successful! The blackberries worked well in the Navy Vanna’s Choice® and Black Vanna’s Glamour® for a little sparkle. The sunflowers were the most time consuming. I, particularly, enjoyed making the vegetables because of all their many shapes, colors, and textures. The turnips are perhaps my favorite.
