When it comes to crafting your own garment, it’s so much more than just following the pattern. The elements that make the biggest difference in the overall fit & feel of your piece get almost no mention in the fine print. Whether you’re embarking on your first knitted garment, or are looking to advance your skills for your next project, we have the perfect classes for you. Join us later in May & early in June for two garment skills workshops, and elevate your next garment from ‘home-made’ to ‘hand-made’!
Garment Skills Workshops
Later this month, we are offering two workshops in a row that focus on some of the trickiest aspects of garment knitting. Your gauge swatch and blocking & finishing are the first & last steps, but they are enormously important. The best way to knit sweaters with the perfect fit is to understand the role of gauge before you begin and how to handle blocking and seaming once the knitting is complete.
Gauge Your Tension
Tuesday, May 22nd | 6pm – 8pm
This class will delve into more than just the math of stitches-per-inch. We’ll talk about drape, and other qualities of the knitted fabric, which will elevate the look of your finished product. We’ll also investigate what to do when your gauge doesn’t exactly match the pattern gauge. This class will empower you to use gauge to your advantage (rather than a pre-knitting chore!), and put you in control of your results.
- Tuition: $50/2 Hour Session
- Skills Needed: Must know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off. Must recognize knit & purl stitches, and be able to work them in a pattern without supervision.
- Materials Needed:
Yarn: Worsted Weight Yarn (Tip: Smooth, light-colored yarn will help you see stitches more easily!)
Needles: US 8 or 9 (or whatever size you use for swatching)
Accessories: Tape Measure or Ruler, Calculator, Paper & Pen
- Homework: Using your worsted weight yarn, cast on 24 stitches, knit in stockinette for 4 inches, and bind off.
Blocking & Finishing for Knitters
Tuesday, May 29th | 6pm – 8pm & Tuesday, June 5th | 5:30pm – 8pm
This two-part class includes both theoretical and practical explorations of these processes of ‘finishing touches’. We’ll cover the blocking process, as well as practical instruction in several types of seam that are most common in knitted garments: Mattress Stitch, Horizontal Seam, Three-Needle Bind-off, Picking Up Stitches, & more. You’re encouraged to bring any pieces or projects that you have finishing questions about to the second session!
- Tuition: $75/2 Sessions
- Skills Needed: Must know how to cast on, knit, purl, bind off, and work simple decreases without supervision.
- Materials Needed:
Yarn: One Hank LB Collection Pure Wool, 24/7 Cotton, or Kitchen Cotton
Needles: Use the needle recommended for your yarn (or the needle size you use to work with worsted weight yarn). Bring your swatching needles with you to class.
Accessories: Scissors, Large Eye Blunt Needle, Locking Stitch Markers
- Homework: Make 3 swatches & bring to your first class. To see instructions for these swatches, click the link below! There will be homework between weeks 1 & 2.
