Self-striping yarns add excitement to any project, especially socks and shawls. What’s even more exciting is creating your own self-striping yarn with your own color combinations.
In class we will be working with sock blanks that have been knit on the machine. This gives you a long piece of fabric that you can think of as your blank canvas. Then you can literally paint the stripes on your yarn the same way you would want them to appear in your project. It’s almost like getting a sneak peak at a finished project before you even make it! What’s even better is that the blanks are double stranded so you can make a pair of socks right from the blank and they will make identical stripes!
In class we will also cover the basics of dyeing protein fibers, touch on some color theory, different ways of painting for stripes, and how you can create self-striping yarn at home, with or without a sock blank.
Here’s a home dyeing tip: If you want to make 2 identical skeins but don’t have a double stranded blank you can hank 2 skeins together into one big hank. After you dye it you can wind it back into two balls and they will match.
