Teaching the The Many Shapes of Knitting and Crocheting — Motifs! on August 14th, Heather Lodinsky is no stranger to Lion Brand Yarn’s educational community. If you also read the Lion Brand Notebook, you may remember her as the leader of many of its online knit-alongs (KALs) and crochet-alongs (CALs). (Click the highlighted text to read her posts about the Cable Luxe Tunic, the Moderne Jacket, and the Saturday Morning Hoodie — this is just a sampling!) She has also worked as a freelance designer for us in the past, contributing to our collection of free patterns.
Over on the Lion Brand Notebook, Zontee recently spoke to Heather about her first book, 150 Knit & Crochet Motifs, on which this Master Class* is based. Click here to learn about how the book came to be — if you’ve ever participated in a Lion Brand Notebook KAL or CAL, you may be more involved than you think!
About the class, Heather tells us…
“One of the best things about motifs is that the motif itself is a swatch that can be used to plan a project. With any knit or crochet shape (motif), many interesting items can be planned with the help of…a copy machine. By using photocopies of one or more shapes — along with colored pencils and scissors — you can see what your project will look like by figuring out different colorways, yarn amounts, and the use of ‘connector’ motifs to ‘fill in the blanks.’ You can even calculate yarn amounts with a simple kitchen scale in advance of any project!
In this class, once we learn the basics of making motifs, we’ll explore ideas for projects using the motifs alone, as well as projects and gifts that can be made with single motifs. We’ll use various combinations to show how different geometrical shapes work with each other. Finally, we’ll go over joining techniques that will work for both knitted and crocheted motifs.”
Heather Lodinsky: The Many Shapes of Knitting and Crocheting – Motifs!
Sun 8/14/2011 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Both knitting and crochet can result in many shapes beyond the square. Based on Heather Lodinsky’s own book, 150 Knit and Crochet Motifs, this class will feature all 150 of the original motifs! Heather will show how different yarns and needles or hooks can change any of these shapes. She will also teach blocking and joining techniques as well as answer the question: “What can I do with these shapes?” by showing you how to combine the various shapes of the motifs into beautiful projects!
Tuition: $65 / 3 hour session
Prerequisite: This class is for both knitters and crocheters with at least beginning level of knitting, crocheting, or both.
Homework: Optional: knit or crochet in advance of class.
