On Friday, 24 fantastically lucky knitters were hanging on Cat’s every tip and trick as she walked us through her ingenious little cowl pattern: Seven Super Skills Cowl. This one pattern contains some of Cat’s most famous tips for knitters.  Turns out she got so excited while writing the pattern she accidentally included 8 tips, but she loved the alliteration of Seven Super Skills.  We were only 1 or 2 tips in when one student declared, “Thank you, I can go home now.  Just got my money’s worth!”

On Sunday Cat came back to teach her mind-blowing Sweet Tomato Heel Sock.  If you’ve had trouble with short rows in the past, this is the sock for you.  It features the smoothest short row ever (why it’s as smooth as a Tomato)!

Thanks Cat!  I hope we don’t have  to wait another 2 years before we see you again!

We had so much fun at our annual Crochet-Along this year! Five weeks flew by as we moved step by step through this adorable sweater together.  We covered the ins and outs of a really simple and cute top-down crochet cardigan in many different yarns.  The original pattern was designed in Amazing, but people got really creative with cotton yarns for the approaching summer weather. I helped navigate people through the trickier bits like shaping the yoke, separating the sleeves from the body, attaching the front bands seamlessly, and putting the sleeves on.  I think everyone’s favorite part of this sweater is that the only seams were at the end of the sleeve cuffs!  In the last session, we talked blocking and weaving in ends properly…and all ended up with a unique and versatile Perfect Crochet Cardigan!

Last week the prolific and entertaining Edie Eckman visited the Studio to share samples and stories from her two new books: Connect the Shapes: Crochet Motifs and Crochet One-Skein Wonders.

The world of crochet motifs is so much bigger than granny squares! Edie showed us a sampling of the over one hundred gorgeous, textured, and  multi-layered motifs from her book Connect the Shapes: Crochet Motifs – swirly triangles, 3D flowers, and seemingly-intricate knots that are all joined “as you go”! In addition to the patterns for the motifs, the book includes both charted and written instructions for joining them in a myriad of beautiful ways. Efficiency and beauty (and avoiding ends to weave in….) are the hallmarks of this inspiring collection.

Did we mention that she’s prolific? The other book Edie had some samples to share from is Crochet One-Skein Wonders, which she co-edited with Judith Durant. This is the first all-crochet “One Skein Wonder” book, and the call went out far and wide to professional and amateur designers from around the world. The book is chock full of projects: hats, headbands, gloves and mittens, but also doll clothes, a generously-sized baby blanket made with Pound of Love, a mobius cowl made with one skein of Wool Ease Thick & Quick, a felted purse, and some absolutely adorable amigurumi: Louis the Lobster and a robot made with Vanna’s Choice.

Edie also brought many swatches that were quite large to demonstrate the different things that can be done with the same motif in a different scale of yarn. Some of them, worked up in Zpagetti, for example, would make lovely mats and rugs. Garments, on the other hand, benefit from the use of smaller motifs to allow more opportunities for shaping and adjusting size.

Edie also joined us on Sunday for two fabulous master classes! That morning 15 lucky crocheters got to learn there’s more than one way to join a crochet motif in Edie’s “Join As You Go” (JAYGO) class – one of Edie’s favorite methods. If you hate to weave in ends, but love the look of crochet motifs, this is the perfect technique to use; all of the finishing is done “as you go!”

In the afternoon, Edie taught us “How to Say It!” She artfully guided students through the logic of composing well-written patterns for all types of audiences, and what’s expected of designers in the hand-knitting and crocheting publishing world. Our students left class understanding all of the aspects of getting a pattern published – Edie gave them some great tips for success in both collaborative publishing and in self-publishing.
