Who doesn’t love those cute little creatures peeking out the windows of Japanese stores? Did you ever check the prices on them? Those tiny toys can by quite pricey, so why not make them yourself? Just one ball of yarn and a hook will do, and you can make tiny friends of all kinds of different shapes and colors!
Many people think amigurumi are only useful as decorations – I beg to differ! I love making them for many different reasons. Finished amigurumi make perfect baby shower gifts and adorable Christmas tree ornaments. But making your own amigurumi is half the fun! Finishing a project is so satisfying, and with amigurumi, your projects are so small you can finish them in no time. These little projects are also a wonderful way to explore crocheting and experiment with different techniques. For example, you can try out the spiral or joined-round methods as you work in the round (just make sure you are using the stitch markers to indicate the beginning of each row).
Here’s a hint to help you get those tiny stitches you see in store-bought amigurumi: Whatever hook you normally use with your yarn of choice, try going down a hook size. This will help you make tighter fabric, and that helps to keep all the stuffing inside.
